How to Transfer a YouTube Channel Safely: Ownership Transfer Guide

By Buy Any Asset Team · Oct 1, 2026 · 7 min read

Transferring a YouTube channel is the most sensitive part of any channel sale. Done properly, the buyer ends up in full control and the seller gets paid. Done badly, either side can lose the channel or the money.

This guide explains how YouTube channel ownership transfer works and the safe order of steps for buyers and sellers.

1. Make sure the channel is a Brand Account

Ownership can only be shared and transferred on channels connected to a Brand Account. If the channel is tied directly to a personal Google account, the seller must first move it to a Brand Account in YouTube settings before the sale can continue.

2. Agree the steps in writing first

  • Price and payment method (escrow)
  • Date the buyer will be invited
  • Date ownership will be switched to Primary Owner
  • When the seller will be removed
  • What else is included: email, social profiles, files, freelancers

3. Fund escrow before any access is given

The buyer pays into escrow first. The money is held safely and is not released to the seller yet. This protects the seller from giving access without being paid, and the buyer from paying for a channel they never receive.

4. The seller invites the buyer as Owner

From the Brand Account permissions, the seller adds the buyer's Google account as an Owner. The buyer accepts the invitation and confirms they can open YouTube Studio for the channel.

5. Wait for the Primary Owner waiting period

Google requires a new owner to have been an Owner for a period of time (usually about 7 days) before they can be made Primary Owner. During this time, the buyer should not change important settings and the seller should not remove the buyer.

6. Switch Primary Owner and remove the seller

Once the waiting period is over, the seller transfers Primary Ownership to the buyer. The buyer then removes the seller and any other managers they do not recognize, and reviews security settings on their own Google account.

7. Set up AdSense and confirm the handover

AdSense is normally not transferred. The buyer links the channel to their own AdSense account in YouTube Studio. After confirming full control, the buyer approves the transfer and escrow releases the payment to the seller.

Safety checklist

  • Channel is a Brand Account
  • Payment held in escrow before access
  • Buyer added as Owner and can open YouTube Studio
  • Waiting period completed
  • Buyer is Primary Owner and seller removed
  • Buyer's own AdSense linked
